2 Months with Maverik

Happy already 2 months with my Maverik boy! Wow, this month went by so fast! He loves making lots of noise and it looks like he’s trying to talk to us. When he spots me, he gives me the biggest smile, and it’s honestly the best feeling in the world! Yes, my life is chaotic and messy with blowouts (sometimes three in a row), mountains of laundry, and juggling two kids—but I wouldn’t have it any other way!

He currently eats 3–6 ounces per feeding, and at night he can even guzzle 12 ounces. Sometimes he rewards us with a solid 6-hour stretch of sleep, and a few times even 8 hours! When he does have a long stretch, he wakes up screaming like he’s starving to death. We usually say, “Calm down, you’re not dying,” but poor baby—he wants milk so badly and goes from 0 to 100 in 0.2 seconds. We still have nights where he wakes up every 3–4 hours, but overall, he’s adjusting to a night schedule.

We’re using the mamaRoo Sleep Bassinet, which has 4 different motions and 4 sleep sounds. He loves the movement and the nature sounds like rain—it’s honestly been a game changer for us. When his eyes get heavy after a feeding, we swaddle him and lay him in the bassinet and he falls asleep right away. We also make sure to burp him before bed so he can sleep longer. He gets super fussy when he’s gassy, so we stay on top of that.

Speaking of baby gear I love, my new nursery chair finally arrived after a 2-month delay! I fell in love with a baby blue gingham glider and ordered it in early July. I know it was cutting it close, but the price made me think for a while before buying it. It was supposed to arrive a week before his due date, but it ended up backordered everywhere. I checked six different retailers and all of them were backordered too. I’m glad I didn’t switch to another chair though—I love the aesthetic and how wide it is. Katerina can sit next to me on it, so I’m excited for lots of story time with both Katya and Maverik!

I also ordered Maverik his own chair from Pottery Barn, just like his sister’s! I got one in navy with white piping and another in blue gingham to match the glider. I’m planning to take a photo of him every month in these chairs until he turns 1.

At his doctor visit, my favorite part—no surprise—is seeing his weight and how chunky he’s getting. Measurement-wise, he is now 12 lb 0.8 oz (49th percentile) and 22.5 inches (32nd percentile). He’s gaining about a pound a week, and I’m so proud of my boy!

As for his height, I think I forgot to mention this in my last post: the hospital measured him incorrectly at birth. They recorded him as 20.5 inches, but at his first-week appointment he measured something like 19.5 inches, so it obviously wasn’t adding up. He didn’t shrink—they just measured too quickly and kind of sloppily (it was literally a quick marker on paper), so no wonder there was a 1-inch difference, lol. Anyway, good to know he wasn’t magically getting shorter—no panic there!

During this visit, Maverik got his routine recommended vaccines. He cried, of course, but calmed down after lots of cuddles and milk. We were planning to take him to his first pumpkin patch, but he woke up screaming to the point where his whole face turned red, and he screamed so much he was screaming silently. We tried everything—bouncing, cuddling, feeding—but he was so upset he couldn’t even suck on the bottle. After a solid 20 minutes, he finally calmed down enough to eat. I’ve never seen him that upset before, and it was honestly a little scary, but thankfully he was back to his normal self afterward. I’m relieved he recovered quickly, but also nervous about how he’ll react to his next shots.

Last but not least, here are some milestones he hit in his second month according to the CDC milestone app:

  • Seems happy to see you when you walk up to him
  • Smiles when you talk to or smile at him
  • Reacts to loud sounds
  • Watches you as you move
  • Looks at a toy for several seconds
  • Hold heads up when on tummy
  • Opens hands briefly
  • Makes cooing sounds like “oooo”, “aahh” (cooing)
  • Makes sounds back when you talk to him

The first two and the last two melt my heart every time.

As for tummy time, the doctor told us we need to do more each day. The right side of his head is a bit flatter than the left, and the left neck muscle seems tense. She said if it doesn’t improve by his 4-month checkup, they might recommend physical therapy, because tight neck muscles can make it harder for him to turn his head. He definitely has a favorite side, so we’re doing our best and hoping for progress by the next appointment. Let’s go, tummy time!
