12 Oct Purple Witch and Idaho Potato

Spooky season is upon us again, and it’s Katerina’s favorite! This year is extra special because she had a Halloween event at school—and it was her first-time celebrating Halloween with her friends.

The school had a few costume requirements: no masks, no weapon-like accessories, and the costume had to be something she could get in and out of by herself. With all that in mind, we were walking around Target, and she pointed to a witch costume and confidently declared, “I want to be a purple witch!”
It was girly, fluffy, and sparkly—basically perfect. The costume closed with Velcro, so she could easily get in and out on her own. It was a little big on her at first, so Grandma worked her magic by moving the Velcro to tighten it and shortening the hem since it was dragging on the floor. We wanted to make sure she could run around and play comfortably at school, and thanks to my MIL, she got to be the purple witch she wished for!
The costume didn’t come with a broom, so I ordered a simple plastic one from Amazon, and it ended up being just right. Her sparkly candy basket, also from Target, matched the outfit perfectly.

She’s been very into witches lately and loves pretending to cast spells. She says her own version of “abracadabra” (not quite right, but close enough lol) and freezes people using her broom as a wand. The problem is, she freezes people and forgets to unfreeze them—so I just stand there frozen until she comes back to rescue me. Maybe she’s having a little too much fun!
She asked Erik to be Dracula and me to be a pink witch. I don’t think her wish will come true this year… but we’ll see…

She also got to trick-or-treat at the church attached to her school and came home with treats and fun little toys from the priests and school staff. It was so sweet to see not only her classmates, but also parent volunteers and teachers fully dressed up. What a core memory for these pre-K kids! I loved looking through all the school photos afterward.

Speaking of firsts, this was Maverik’s very first Halloween costume. I was inspired by his birthplace—Idaho—and immediately knew I had to do something potato-themed. He’s the only family member born in Idaho so far, so it felt extra fitting!

When I started looking for a potato costume for a newborn, I quickly realized there were basically no options—none at all, actually. I even considered making one myself with a potato sack, but I really wanted something easier. I ended up finding a realistic potato costume meant for kids and decided to use that instead. It already had head and arm cutouts, so I figured I’d just tighten the bottom since it would obviously be too big.
The costume was technically designed to only cover the top half of a child’s body, but on Maverik, it covered his entire body perfectly. Somehow, it fit him just right without needing any adjustments at all!

To complete the potato theme, I lined a cardboard box with postal paper and tossed in a bunch of real potatoes. I made a cute little price sign for my potato boy—and of course, the price was priceless. I pulled all the props together in about 10 minutes, and it was time for photos.
Taking pictures of a newborn is always tricky—you never know when they’ll cry because of hunger, a wet diaper, or in this case, a costume. I worked fast to get the shots before any meltdown happened. He got a little fussy when the costume covered part of his face, but overall, he did amazing. He even gave me a few smiles, which completely melted my heart.

I’m so glad his first costume was a success, and I can’t wait to dress him up in many more outfits in the future!

Happy Halloween,
Fatima
